This is a great jig. It is heavy duty, and extremely well made, as I have come to expect from Jessem. It is heavy enough that I don’t have to worry about banding the jig by applying too much clamping pressure. I like the large size, which allows me to put dowels at locations far from the reference edge. My one complaint regards the depth stop. I would expect Jessem to give us a depth stop that cinches tight around the periphery of the bit rather than the stupid kind that runs a set screw st…raight into the side of the bit. On the 1/4” size, the depth stop only works is you drive the set screw into one of the slots in the bit, thereby damaging the bit at that point. (C’mon, Jessem, you can do better than this!) But, I can always use a piece of tape or get a third-party depth stop. Speaking of third party, be carful where you get your dowels. I tried some third party dowels that turned out to be undersized and made the joints loose. I measured both the dowels and the holes, and the holes were correct and the dowels were undersized, so it wasn’t the fault of the jig. I ordered some dowels from Jessem and they are nice and snug. Others have commented that the reference fence is only adjustable in 1/8th inch steps, so you can’t put the dowels any distance you want from the reference surface. Yes, true, but it isn’t usually necessary to get the dowels in the exact center of the part, and with 1/8th inch adjustability, you can get withing 1/16th inch of the center. That’s usually close enough, but if you need to be closer to the center than 1/16, you can use a thin shim to make it come out right. Bottom line: this is a great jig!
Outstanding and easy to set up and use worth the money. Wish they had a 5/16th one as well. Great craftsmanship and very True. I had no trouble with the depth stop as long as you had it on the flat part of the bit
Works Like It Should, Even on 2x Lumber This relatively cheap tool works like it should. Watch a couple videos before using it. My observations: 1. No Need to Measure. Just put the first set of dowels wherever you want. 2. Clamp the Jig to Workpiece. At least for the first set of dowel holes, clamp the jig, as it will prevent it from wandering. 3. The Depth Stop is Worthless. Like every other allen screw depth stop, this one moves and is worthless. Use a piece of tape or …eyball the depth. 4. Clamp the Two Work Pieces Together for the Second Set of Dowels. You don't want that second board wandering. 5. No Need to Clamp the Jig on the Second Set of Dowel Holes. The Index Pin will hold the jig steady.
I really like this jig. Quality and accuracy are top notch. I would like to see JessEm make a 45° fence for doweling long edge meters. For doing something like a waterfall edge on a table.
Use this thing heavily. I like that you can use a dowel in a previously drilled set of holes as a guide for the mating set
I bought a cheap dowel jig years ago for one job and basically forgot about it. Years later I'm building a large table with an intricate base, pulled out the old jig, that was about as far as it went. No 45s or 22 1/2 joints, so l ordered the Jessem dowel jig. Wow I've started to use dowels for everything. Easy setup and clamping, a great tool ,very accurate.
I have 3 other doweling jigs that I've used over the years. This one has been a huge improvement. With some careful attention and consistent clamping, every one of my dowel holes have lined up with their intended mates EXACTLY.If you've ever had trouble with doweling, buy this!
Dwelling jig is made from thick, heavy aluminum. Makes joining wood pieces easy. You may need to find/build a better way to store the product.
So had this jig for a wile now about 3 months finaly got to use it today my left over mdf wasnt long enuff to make the size door i wanted anyways after a little learning curve i figures out how to align the too boards so could make the door 6 dowels in total little glue little tap with the rubber mallet some 220 sand paper painted it u cant tell where the joint is super happy i spent the extra money on this jig already saved me 50 bucks on buying a half sheet of mdf
I needed something better than my biscuit joiner, but did not want to spend the money on a Domino system. I was impressed with the materials used in this jig. Everything is built strongly and has easily taken on a few falls from the workbench without a mark. It takes more time than a domino system, but what is time when you building great things. The only thing it would have been great to have is a case with something of this cost. Not worth taking away a star, as it is extremely easy to build a… storage system for it.
